Artist Insights: Philip Vermeulen

For Artist Insights, our new audio interview series exploring the evolving field of sensory art through the perspectives of artists, we reached out to Art Senses 2026 Mentorship Programme applicants who received special recognition for their project proposals. Guided by this year’s programme theme, Sensing the Invisible, we invited Philip Vermeulen to reflect on the following question:

How can art reveal the invisible architecture of the senses?

This question arises from our interest in how artists translate imperceptible phenomena into sensory experiences, engaging with forces, systems, and conditions that typically evade human perception, and seeking new ways to render them accessible. For more on this topic, read our feature, Learning from Artists: How to Sense the Imperceptible.

Philip Vermeulen is a Dutch artist who explores the fundamentals of human perception. His installations are created to be experienced with the whole body, while challenging the physicality of light, sound, movement, and vibrations.
